Madonna and Child
2024
Charcoal on Paper
72” x 50”

Madonna and Child layers references of Michaelangelo’s Madonna della Pietá as well as Medieval and Renaissance Madonna and Child imagery (the arched windows are taken from da Vinci’s Madonna Litta). However, unlike the Pietá, here the child is alive and engaged with the viewer, turned toward and comfortable. Madonna, while she is clearly signified with a halo, her face is covered completely. Her identity erased apart from her bare feet and breast which her child chooses to turn away from. The mother and child are situated in a modern-day living room with mid-century modern furniture and toys decorate the built-ins behind them.

Here I am commenting on many issues as I have experienced them in motherhood, among them being: postpartum depression, the alienation of caregiving, socially acceptable breastfeeding un/covering, and both the hallowed as well as the debased roles of the mother.
